The incredible hulks

TC, Captain and Matey have spent the last couple of days at Moreton Island near Tangalooma. Anchoring provided some angst-ridden moments as just the right spot was found – but fortunately the anchor has held fast. As soon as it was down there was more excitement as Mr Plod pulled up alongside to check the safety equipment and PFDs (personal flotation devices - otherwise known as lifejackets). Captain and Matey have braved thunderstorms and lashings of rain, as well as sunshine, luminous sunsets, wind, waves, and ferries venturing a little too close for the Captain’s comfort.

The anchorage is beside some artificial reefs created by rusting hulks sunk in the ‘80s. These ship carcasses have become an aquarium for thousands of fish with apparently no fear of snorkellers. Although the coral was limited, for quantity of pretty fish at close range (swimming close enough to touch), Matey and Captain rated this as among the best snorkeling they have done. It also is in a beautiful location with turquoise waters and a clean and smooth beach, perfect for walking along, despite the 4WDs. Even the rusting hulks provide a strangely attractive break in the waterline and, amazingly, don’t destroy the natural beauty. (Matey wishes she could say as much for the resort further up the beach.) Amazingly too, this is not a national park, so fishing is allowed. Apparently though, the fish are so well fed they often don’t take the bait! Heh heh.
